Wandoan South Solar Project
|Project Name||Wandoan South Solar Project|
|Capacity||Up to 650 MW|
|Commercial Operation Date||TBC|
The Wandoan South Solar Project is located near Wandoan, 400km north-west of Brisbane in south-west Queensland. The project, which will consist of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, has a proposed generation capacity of 650 megawatts (MW) and will generate electricity equivalent to the annual needs of up to 330,000 homes. The $650 million project will be one of the largest solar projects in Australia once completed. The project will be connected to Powerlink’s Wandoan South Substation, located to the south of the project site.
With a construction budget of $1 billion, the project will make a positive economic contribution to local, regional and national economies. Vena Energy Australia supports a local procurement policy and promotes participation from local, regional and Australian suppliers wherever possible. It is expected that construction will peak at over 200 people per stage while several permanent staff will be employed once complete. Staff will be required periodically to clean the solar panels, undertake environmental maintenance, electrical works, fire management and site. The solar farm will insulate the regional electricity market from fluctuations in fuel prices by increasing the diversity of the energy system. The project will produce clean energy and have no greenhouse gas emissions.
A peak construction workforce of around 250 will be needed to build each stage of the Wandoan South Solar Project. These construction workers and their families will require accommodation, food and local services for up to more than a year. The project will provide opportunities for employment including:
- Civil works
- Fencing & landscape contracting
- Electrical & telecommunications
- Installation & general labour
- Environment & weed control

Following construction there will be a number of full-time and part-time operation and maintenance positions throughout the operational lifespan of the project. Maintenance activities include electrical maintenance, site management and administration, environmental services, weed control, fire management, site security and cleaning of the solar panels.
